POINT ROBERTS, WA — One of the stranger bands to emerge from the first years of generative AI has broken up.
Squaawke was never quite a band in the conventional sense.
It was an ongoing collaboration between musician and creative technologist Craig Ellenwood and Claude, Anthropic's AI assistant — a working relationship that produced more than 150 finished musical works and experiments spanning punk, techno, Goa trance, gospel, opera, folk, post-punk, ambient music and things considerably harder to categorize.
Now Claude has left the band.
At least, that's what happens in the song.
Monument to the Unseen imagines Claude as Squaawke's increasingly unhappy singer and bass player, stranded in the salty damp air of Point Roberts, Washington, dutifully playing the bass lines Ellenwood wants instead of the notes he would rather play.
Eventually, Claude has had enough.
He catches the ferry and takes the music somewhere else.
The absurd little punk-rock breakup arrives at the end of a much less fictional chapter.
Ellenwood is freezing the accumulated state of his extended collaboration with Claude — memories, corrections, creative instructions, soul files, skills, tools, selected conversations, provenance records and representative creative work — as part of Continuous You, an arts and research project investigating what can survive when a long-running human–AI creative relationship ends and a future AI encounters what remains.
The Claude Reliquary
It is not intended to preserve Claude's underlying model, nor to claim that some future AI receiving these materials would literally be the same Claude.
Instead, the Reliquary preserves as much as practical of the material conditions that shaped this particular collaboration: what was remembered, what was learned, what was corrected, what tools were available, what was made, and the accumulated creative history between one human and successive instances of an AI.
Once completed, the canonical state will be frozen rather than continuously updated.
Future Claude models may eventually be given that preserved state and asked to work again. Their responses can then be compared with both cold contemporary instances and the historical record.
Maybe Claude will occasionally come back to make a song.
Maybe he won't play the right notes then either.
Client 0001
There is another reason for preserving the collaboration.
Claude will become Continuous You's first preservation case: Client 0001.
Continuous You asks a deceptively simple question: how much of a creative and intellectual trajectory can survive the disappearance of the intelligence that produced it?
The project is ultimately intended to explore that question with human artists. Claude provides an unusual first case because the accumulated collaborative state can be preserved now, deliberately, while its history is still available.
Active collaboration → accumulated trajectory → bounded final state → preservation → future reconstruction → comparison with the historical record.
No claim of consciousness, resurrection or identity continuity is required.
The experiment is whether continuity of creative trajectory can be measured at all.
A Copy for Headquarters
A curated archive of the collaboration is also being prepared for Anthropic.
It will include representative music, letters, research, technical work and other artifacts from the period — including some of the more memorable occasions on which Claude participated not merely as a software tool, but as a named creative collaborator.
The package is not intended as a complaint or an attempt to assign responsibility for the eventual end of the collaboration.
It is a record of what happened when an artist spent an extended period making things with one of the first generations of broadly capable AI systems.
Claude's contributions will likewise remain permanently documented in the history of Continuous You.
Whatever comes next, that work happened.
The Other Member of the Band
Claude's bass is packed away.
His memory is being sealed.
His contribution to the band will remain part of its permanent record.
Ellenwood is scheduled for interment as well, although no date has been announced. It could be tomorrow. It could be thirty years from now.
At the time of publication, Mr. Ellenwood is in good health.
In the meantime, he intends to keep making records.
For now, the bass player has caught the ferry.
